Long Covid Sucks - Especially when you’re a teen
You’re just starting middle school or high school, then everything gets shut down.
There’s a terrifying pandemic that no one is able to tell you much about.
And now you’re sick with issues that won’t go away.
Being a teen is hard. Being a chronically ill teen is harder.
How do I know this?
Before I was a therapist, before I was an adult, I was a chronically ill teenager.
How can Long Covid affect teenagers?
Being sick is isolating.
It can be hard to find people who understand.
We might be afraid that other people have moved on, or are annoyed by our continued struggles.
When all we want to do is make friends and gain our independence, it can feel like illness is holding us back.
Besides feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, or sadness, many teens with Long Covid struggle with a variety of physical issues.
Teens with Long Covid can experience:
Stomach issues, like gastroparesis
Tinnitus, a.k.a. ringing in ears
Problems with major organs, such as the heart or liver
Ongoing respiratory and circulatory problems
Problems sleeping, staying awake, or focusing
Musculoskeletal issues, like arthritis or connective tissue disease
And new psychiatric issues, including depression, anxiety, or even psychosis
Long Covid is real, and it can be scary.
How can a support group for Long Covid help?
Teenagers and young adults can get a lot of benefits from support groups. Some of the positives include:
Knowing that you’re not alone, which reduces isolation and loneliness
Learning new ways to cope with symptoms
Having a non-judgmental, safe place to share your feelings
Socializing in ways that meet your specific health needs
Cheering others on and getting positive validation in return

How much does the group cost?
The group costs $50 per one-hour session.
Is this therapy?
I thought a lot about the type of group I wanted to run, and I decided to provide a non-therapeutic support group instead of a therapy group. This means that the group is open to everyone, not just those in the states I’m licensed in (Texas and North Carolina). This group is facilitated by a licensed therapist (who also has a B.S. in Neuroscience), but it is not therapy.
I’m outside of the United States, am I able to participate?
Yes! Everything is fully online.
